Difference between old, diamond and brilliant cut

We differentiate between old cut, diamond cut and brilliant cut.

Old cut diamonds are cut in such a way that their natural size can be optimally handled but contain fewer facets. Old cut diamonds sparkle less since most of the light passes out of the sides. The diamond reflects light much more intensively by cutting larger and smaller facets. The difference between diamond and brilliant is simply the number of cuts: a diamond with more than 58 facets becomes a brilliant cut diamond, hence the term brilliant.

4C grading of diamonds/brilliants

Diamonds are graded based on four criteria (4Cs), which determine their value.

Carat weight

Precious stones are measured based on their weight in carats. Extremely precise diamond scales are used for this purpose, which can accurately determine the weight to 0.001 grams.

You can use the following overview to calculate a rough carat estimate for a diamond/brilliant.

Diameter Carat Diameter Carat
1.4 mm 0.01 ct 6.5 mm 1.0 ct
2.0 mm 0.03 ct 7.4 mm 1.5 ct
3.0 mm 0.10 ct 8.2 mm 2.0 ct
4.1 mm 0.25 ct 9.3 mm 3.0 ct
5.1 mm 0.50 ct 10.3 mm 4.0 ct
5.9 mm 0.75 ct 11.1 mm 5.0 ct
Clarity

The clarity of a diamond is separated into different grades - the subtle differences can only be seen by the trained eye.

All of our larger, and therefore more exclusive, diamonds/brilliants are inspected, certified and valued by external specialists.

Abbreviation Meaning Explanation
Fl Flawless At ten times magnification flawless (neither external defects nor inclusions).
If Internally flawless Flawless with surface traces of processing.
Vvs1 Very, very small inclusions At tenfold magnification, inclusions are only very, very difficult to detect.
Vvs2 Very, very small inclusions At tenfold magnification, inclusions are only very difficult to detect.
Vs1 Very small inclusions At tenfold magnification, inclusions are only difficult to detect.
Vs2 Very small inclusions At tenfold magnification, inclusions are detected.
Si1 Small inclusions At tenfold magnification, inclusions are easy to detect.
Si2 Small inclusions At tenfold magnification, inclusions are detectable, but not with the naked eye.
Pi1 Piqué 1 Inclusions are visible, but do not diminish the brilliance.
Pi2 Piqué 2 Inclusions are visible, diminish the brilliance slightly.
Pi3 Piqué 3 Inclusions are visible, diminish the brilliance considerably.
Color

To the untrained eye, diamonds appear mostly colourless although almost all of them have a light to intense hint of green, brown or grey. The colour fine white+ is the most valuable.

Cut

The so-called cut is the final criteria when determining the value. A good cut is characterised by the proportion between the table, facets and rondist.
